Cyndy Garcia-Weyandt to Join Kalamazoo College Faculty

Doctoral Candidate, Cyndy Garcia-Weyandt will be joining the faculty of Critical Ethnic Studies as an incoming Assistant Professor in the Fall of 2020. At Kalamazoo, this program works “from Indigenous, national, and international frameworks.” Garcia-Weyandt has been collaborating with urban Wixárika (Huichol) communities in Mexico, working to better understand their relationships with Our Mother Corn (“Native Seeds”). Her dissertation combines a focus on inter-species relations with her participation in cultural performances, including planting and art education. She has co-founded a language revitalization program in Zitakua, Tepic where students use art as a means to keep their mother tongue vital in the various communities. She has recently submitted a chapter on methodology in the edited volume, Community-Based PhD: Complexities, Triumphs, Missteps, and Joys of Community-based & Participatory Action Research as Graduate Students. Additionally, she co-authored the article ‘UXIMAYATSIKA TANIUKI: Tita teteuka xexeiya Taniuki tek+x+amayatat+ teiwarit+a muye Haneys” for the Yolitia Revista Electrónica in Mexico. And her recent article on Wixárika land and identity is under revision in the journal, Theory & Event.
