Ph.D. in Culture and Performance

Sophie Capobianco (they/them/theirs) is an interdisciplinary performance scholar researching prefigurative politics, social movements, abolitionist theory, Black and decolonial studies, and performance art. Their work explores the social worlds of grassroots political movements as they propose a theory of performative prefiguration at the intersection of political theory and performance studies. Their 2024 Master’s Essay, “Utopia in D Yard: Prefigurative Politics and the Attica Prison Uprising of 1971” was published in TDR: The Drama Review after winning the 2024 Student Essay Contest. Sophie graduated with their M.A. in Theater and Performance Studies from Washington University in St. Louis, where they were the Head of Research for the Prison Education Project. They are a community organizer in West Los Angeles, currently focused on community self-defense.
