Maya Billig

Maya Billig is a choreographer and director based in Los Angeles, California, creating interdisciplinary, world-building performances at the intersection of dance, theatre, and film. Her work interrogates mythologies embedded in contemporary culture as a method of mapping and processing contradictions. Often set in dreamlike or dystopian landscapes, her pieces fuse absurdity with mystery and glamour, exploring the sharp edges and seductions of power. Influenced by her upbringing in Miami’s culturally chaotic backdrop and her travels to over 35 countries, Maya’s work is fueled by tension, humor, and a sense of the uncanny.
Maya's work has been supported by organizations including Jacob’s Pillow, Knight Foundation, Miami Light Project, Live Arts Miami, Dance Magazine, Adrienne Arsht Center, Art Omi, and Locust Projects. She received an MFA in Choreographic Inquiry from UCLA, and a BFA in Dance from New World School of the Arts. Through the support of many, she’s presented two evening-length works along with many short-form pieces and improvisational, site-specific performances.
Maya’s dance films have been shown across various countries, taking her on a path of collaborating with filmmakers, musicians, and visual artists internationally. When living in Miami, she founded Syncopate Collective, which focuses on community-based initiatives, and her own project-based company, Billy Gee Dance Theatre. She is currently building her third organization focused on multidisciplinary projects, Not My Queen Productions.
